90-year-old returns to training

At 9.03pm tonight the clocks will be turned back at Bendigo in Victoria.

That's when 90-year-old Josie Justice will have her first horse at the races since 2002 when Daisy Starzzz debuts in the Hunter Rural 2YO Pace.

The mother of John and Lance Justice, Josie thought it was time to get back into training while she still could. She first took out her trainer’s licence when she was 19.

“I thought it might be my last hoorah,” she told the trots.com.au, “I’m getting on in years and thought it would be nice to train a winner.”

Despite being in just a six horse race tonight Daisy Starzzz is rated a $9 chance, after finishing third at a recent trial. Justice bought her at the yearling sales, with son John driving her tonight.

“She’s a nice filly, probably can’t win on Wednesday, but she’ll run a nice race. She’s got a bit of a future.”

Josie Justice’s first winner was Grand Revival in 1995 – tonight she’s making one of her own.
